The Doubting Writer Finds His Voice

Recovering

Where am I? Who am I?

It was a great weekend, don’t get me wrong, but it ended as it began on Tuesday (though that wasn’t the beginning of my weekend; I had to work on Wednesday), with ten hours of driving to collect two little birds from two different college campuses. The good thing is that they ended up in schools that at least are in line with each other, and not in opposite directions. The unfortunate thing is that we ended up dropping off the Magpie about 2-1/2 hours before anything–and I mean anything–opened up on her campus. Dorm? Locked. Campus Center? Locked. Library? Every light in the place was on, but locked. She got into the foyer of her dorm, but couldn’t get beyond that. At least she was not out in the cold. The good news is we got a text about an hour after we left her that someone let her in. I don’t know if it was a staff person or one of the students who stayed over break (I guess they re-code the locks so only students who are approved to be there can get into the buildings), but she didn’t have to wait too long. All’s well that ends well, and all that.

It was nice (well, that’s too mild a word, really) to have them home, nice to hear their voices and their laughter and the way they sing together, and now the house is quiet again and it’s time to settle back into the routine, until it’s time to collect them again in about 3 weeks. But my routine is all fouled up again. I was struggling along with my current project, writing at night for a couple of hours, but this weekend I found once again the joys of morning writing, particularly on Friday and Saturday. The problem for me is that I am a slow starter in the mornings; sleeping late on those two days (‘late’ meaning 6:30 one day, 7 the other), I probably didn’t actually start writing until closer to 8. The fact that I’m writing this post about 20 minutes after getting up is encouraging, but I feel pressure also to shower, make lunch and get to work a little early. Still, maybe I can disappear into the zone for a little bit each day.

I think that’s all I’m going to say for today. I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving, a nice weekend, or a nice week since the last post. Off to the zone for a little bit!

  1. Yeah, the holiday messed up my writing for sure. My reading, too! And then I have these long weekends with hubby to look forward to in December (he has vacation to use or lose and he won't lose it). I just hope he keeps busy (and quiet) so that I can write, but I ain't holding my breath. Haha! 🙂

Of course, I'm still not writing and the house is quiet. Shopping, even on line, is time consuming. But at least I'm finished. I think. I hope. We'll see. Now it's time for MY shower! 🙂

  2. Glad you had your girls home for the holiday. My son flew home for the weekend from college. He'll be back again in about ten days, too, when the semester is over. It's an eight hour drive, but only a one hour flight. No brainer, and I loved having him home again.

And congrats on finding the writing time. I've been plugging away on a new story, one that's got me quite excited to write. 🙂

  3. Sounds like you had a nice weekend, great to get the kids home. Christmas is going to be on top of us before we know it, so the quiet won't last long! I'm the same in the morning – it's when I prefer to write, but it can take up to an hour to be conscious enough.

  4. It's funny the things that can throw off our routines. The older I get the more sympathetic I am to little babies. 😀 I think I'm reverting. I'm glad you got to enjoy your girls.

  5. -Indeed, we do, Sheena-kay. Thanks for stopping in, nice to see you again.
-Stacy–sounds like you need a 'Don't Poke The Bear' sign for those days your hubby is around. I'm sure he'll understand if you tell him you need a couple-three hours each day!
-L.G.–Nice to see you again! Unfortunately, the nearest airports are all about equi-distant from us–which means it would take us as long to drive to them as it would take to pick up the Magpie, so that's not really much of an option. Good luck with your new story!
-Jemi–it did go fast, and it was very nice. Thanks!
-Nick–Indeed, Thanksgiving was late this year. We're already inside of four weeks from the big Christmas. Thanks for commenting!
-Donna–Maybe reversion is one of the privileges of getting older?

  6. I went to school on the East coast while my family lived in Indiana, so I was one of the ones that stayed in the dorms during breaks. I quite enjoyed the quiet and privacy. I'm glad your daughters will be coming home for Christmas soon (since you sound lonely without them). Good luck finding writing time!

  7. -Lexa–on a certain level, I imagine it's a welcome break from the insanity of a college campus. On the other hand, when we dropped The Magpie off before things were officially open, it was like a ghost town, kind of creepy. Thanks!
