The Doubting Writer Finds His Voice

A Quote

At the end of last week we watched V for Vendetta, a 2005 film based on a graphic novel. It was a fine film, a great blend of action, ideas, and a bit of romance. A number of things said in the film stood out, but perhaps none (for me) more than this from early in the film:

“Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth.”

Powerful stuff, that, and there’s nothing I can add to it.

  1. You have a good taste in movies! V for Vendetta is my favourite… I am determined to one day learn V's introductory speech to Evey, where every word starts with 'v'.

This quote is one of many throughout the movie with a really powerful message and meaning behind it. Thanks for sharing! (Bonnee proceeds to watch V for Vendetta.)

  2. The 'V' speech blew me away–it was great fun to listen to, and it actually made sense, too. It's funny, most movies grab me with images, action, tension. There are a few where it's the words and the ideas they represent that grab me right away. This was one of them. There were so many points in the movie where I'd kind of sit up at a line of dialogue and think, "Yeah!", but not in that tagline sort of way, like when Dirty Harry says, "Do you feel lucky?"

  3. I'm afraid my TBS movie list is as long as my TBR book list. Where does the time go? Thanks for writing about V for Vendetta. Now my list is longer by one.
